Pocket, Pippin, and Paco

You read that right! This week’s Success Story features THREE Muttville dogs, all adopted by lovely mutt mom Kimberly. And more amazing – Kimberly lives in Alaska! Kimberly says, “Sherri teases me now about visiting San Francisco. Each time I leave with a dog.” Enjoy Kimberly’s triple love story:

Pocket, Pippin, and Paco

Our family has adopted three Muttville seniors, all in the past year.

We first became aware of Pocket at the time of her rescue in late June 2012, along with over 20 other dogs, from a hoarder/backyard breeder in Woodland Hills, CA. The original rescue group wanted to keep all the dogs in state and would not let us adopt from Alaska. Pocket had six foster homes and one adoptive family over the summer. Eventually, she was taken in by Muttville, and we were able to adopt her. My son and I flew to San Francisco on 10/31/2012 to bring Pocket back to her forever home in Anchorage, Alaska. Pocket is an amazing little girl! She has adjusted very well to life in Alaska and to her new family. Pocket spent 13 years inside a house, but she now enjoys walks and hikes in the vast outdoors of Alaska.

We returned to San Francisco for a medical meeting in February 2013. At that time, we visited the new Muttville facility to give Sherri an update on Pocket, and to tour the new building. We had two seniors at home, and no intention of adopting another dog. During our visit, an adorable little Maltese picked us out and decided we were not leaving without him. He had just come in to Muttville the evening before, and had not yet been cleaned up. He was dirty and matted, but oh so adorable! We left Muttville with our little Pippin (formerly called Birdy). Pippin also adjusted to life in Alaska, and enjoyed a fabulous summer of walks and picnics, and spending time with friends and family. Sadly, Pippin had a tumor in his spleen which we did not know about. It did not show up on his recent x-rays, any of his vet visits, nor via any of his comprehensive bloodwork. The tumor ruptured, and Pippin was rushed to a 24-hour veterinary clinic, where he died while being prepared for emergency surgery on October 17, 2013. Pippin was an absolute joy, and the life of our household. He is missed terribly.

We were not planning to adopt another dog so soon, but received a call from a close friend in San Francisco, who is also a Muttville volunteer. She called to tell us about an amazing little senior named Paco, who she is fostering for Muttville. Little Paco was found on the streets of Salinas, CA starving and missing much of his hair. With Linda’s devoted care, Paco has been putting on weight and growing his hair back. Of course, we fell in love with him as soon as we saw him, and have officially adopted Paco. I will be flying to San Francisco at the end of November or early December to pick him up and bring him to his forever home in Alaska.
