Francis Bacon a.k.a. Pokey

Enjoy this lovely success story by Sonia and Tracy about their Muttville love, Francis Bacon:

Francis Bacon a.k.a. Pokey

Francis Bacon (AKA Pokey) came into our lives just when we needed him most. Our loving old 12 year old Vizsla had passed away a few months earlier and we were so very very sad. At the Muttville open house the Saturday before Thanksgiving it was an adoption free for all. We test drove a couple of cuties, but the magic just wasn’t there. All of the sudden a volunteer turned around with him in her arms, the sun came out from behind the clouds, and my daughter yelled in my ear, “Quick! Take him before someone else does! This place is like a doggie sidewalk sale!” So we took that little ray of doggie sunshine for a walk. Halfway down the block she said, “Do you think that I could just take him right to the car? You can go back and do the paperwork.” We had to drag ourselves back to take care of his paperwork and then ran gleefully down the street with our fluffy booty. Once in the car he sat up on his hind legs and smiled at us just as “Home Is Wherever I’m With You” popped up on the radio.

When we reached our home, he flew into the house, goosed the horrified guinea pig, and made himself right at home. He is the perfect dog…in the house…on the job…around humans…with large rodents. Our guinea pig, Winston Churchill, has fallen hard for him and sings him ear splitting love songs at all hours. It has taken a little time for Francis to warm up to other dogs though. His first trip to the dog park resulted in him collapsing in the middle of a friendly pack when someone stepped on his tail just as another started yapping in his ear. Luckily, a little terrier coaxed him under a picnic table for some kisses and he warmed right up. Just last week he went to the beach and made about 20 new friends. He will still try to vociferously chase away large and boisterous dogs, but he is starting to appreciate the joys of eating bits of weenie from nice ladies on the beach with packs of other well-behaved hotdog connoisseurs. He even canoodled with a pretty schnauzer, allowed himself to be buried in the fur of a sweet old Akita, and cavorted with a tiny chihuahua princess in a snazzy fleece tankini.

Francis came to us as a completely loving, wonderfully trained, and adorably manipulative creature. All that you have to say is ,“I really need some best time of the day!” and he dances in front of the sofa until you sit down for some serious cuddle time. Right now he is curled up in bed with his girl, encouraging her to put down her Calculus book and work on perfecting her belly rub technique. He travels around with me most days to construction job sites, where his name changes to Frank, and he charms everyone that he meets. It is apparent that he was someone’s darling in the past and I wish that that person could know that he is safe, happy, and lovingly doted upon. What I can do is express our endless gratitude to Muttville and his foster family for saving him, and caring for him, until we were lucky enough to find him in time for the best Thanksgiving Day ever!!!! We love you Muttville and will be back soon to adopt a brother or sister for our Chihuatzupekingeranian. Yes, genetic testing revealed one parent was a Chihuahua/Shih Tzu and the other was a Pekingese/Pomeranian…YIKES…that must be why the guinea pig had such a hard time training him to beg for treats for both of them!
