Max is a 9 year old cocker spaniel/shepherd mix and he is a very sweet and mellow fellow. His family surrendered him to the SPCA because they could no longer take care of him.
He had lived with his family since puppyhood. When he arrived at the SPCA, his coat was so matted that he had to be shaved. He is also very obese and has tested positive for heartworm. All his lab work was normal except for a low thyroid level which means he will need to be on medication for this for the rest of his life.
His family also stated that Max has lived with small children, other dogs, cats, chickens and a goat. His foster mom can attest to the small children, dogs and cats.
Max is a very low key kind of guy who gets along extremely well with everyone—two legged or four legged. He knows sit, come, stay (most of the time) and walks quite well on a leash. Although he has been an outdoor dog 24/7, he adjusted to a more indoor lifestyle in a heartbeat.
He is also completely house broken. When you talk to him face to face, he often talks back very softly.
Max will need his heartworm treatment after he loses some of his excess weight and he has been making great strides with his weight loss.
Now that he’s also taking thyroid medication, his weight will come down much more rapidly than diet and some walking alone.
