Lessons l Learned from Pong
Muttville had a very sad day last week when we lost Pong. Written on the day of her death, foster mom Linda shares with us how little Pong touched her life, and so many of us, in the short time she was with us.
“Today Pong died. She was the tiniest dog I have ever held and she had the biggest heart ever. Her presence and personality were 100 times bigger than her tiny body. Sometimes she looked like a newborn puppy as she tried to scramble up your leg as she was making squeaky puppy sounds, wanting to be held. I couldn’t walk by her as she looked up with those pleading eyes, without scooping her up.
I learned something very important from Pong. I only knew her for about a week, but I loved her deeply. She taught me that when two beings meet with wide open hearts, the love felt can be as deep as the love that sometimes takes years to grow. The wise and amazing dogs at Muttville have taught me so much in the few months that I have been a volunteer. So many of the puppies have experienced extremely difficult lives.Yet most of them come with open hearts, ready to give and receive unconditional love.
When I talk about Muttville people tell me, “the dogs are so lucky to have you.” My heart and soul tell me otherwise….I am lucky to have Muttville…the puppies and all the amazing staff and volunteers that are loving and helping the senior dogs.
I will miss Pong but will always carry a special love and gratitude for her opening my heart even wider and deeper. Thank you little tiny teacher."
Pong spent her final days surrounded by happiness, love and comfort, thanks to caring Muttville fosters and volunteers. Thank you to all who had the honor of loving little Pong.
Very sweet Linda, thanks~
the thing I always hold onto, even in my sadness and grief, is that Pong got loads of adoration, love, warm pockets, laps from so many loving volunteers and she even slept in my armpit at night before she passed. Dogs live in the moment and we made every one of hers mean something good!
My tears flow for little Pong as she reminds me of others I have held and lost and who have touched my heart in a way that is deep and honest. I’m so glad she was surrounded by love.
Thanks so much for sharing this! I met Pong on her first day at Muttville. At the end of my shift the house was empty, most of the pups were sleepy, but little Pong made it be known she was looking for love. She was so tiny I was able to hold and cuddle her while I finished up the laundry and other chores and she was so happy just to be near someone. My heart broke for her that day and it’s wonderful to know she got all that love in her last days, just what she wanted.

Linda, my sincere condolences for the loss of Pong. I immediately fell for her and Ping…reminded me so much of my Peep, another Muttville alumni. When I saw her photo on the “in memory” page, my heart broke. Thank you so much for giving her enough love to last a lifetime and the joy and comfort of your home. Your words are beautiful and so true…these sweet beings live in the moment and forgive all the tragedy they have lived for the joy of the moment. Thank you for giving her that joy! Sending prayers, love, and blessings your way.
